What are Vitamins and Minerals?

Our bodies need vitamins and minerals in order to function and develop properly. There are a variety of vitamins, including vitamin A, multiple B vitamins, and vitamins C, D, E, and K. There a whole bunch of minerals that are important for our nutrition, such as selenium, manganese, fluoride, copper, cobalt, sulfur, iodine, zinc, iron, magnesium, chloride, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, and calcium. Vitamins and minerals can be found in a variety of foods and can be conveniently ingested in the form of a vitamin supplement.

How do they work?

Our bodies are constantly at work making new bone, muscle and skin. Red blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the far corners of the body, sending signals through nerves that go across miles and miles of body and brain pathways. Certain chemicals act as messengers shuttling their way between organs, providing each of them with instructions so they can sustain life and keep our bodies functioning.

As it is for any other process, we need the fuel and materials so our bodies can continue these functions smoothly. This is why we need vitamins and minerals from outside sources like food supplements because our bodies can’t provide enough on their own.

What conditions are they good for?

Getting sufficient vitamins and minerals will help to keep your body working properly, shielding it from a number of unpleasant and sometimes dangerous conditions.

Going without vitamin C for a long time will result in scurvy, a condition that causes the gums to bleed and triggers disorders in the skin and flesh. A lack of sufficient vitamin A has been known to cause eye damage and in some cases even blindness.

A vitamin D deficiency can lead to a condition called rickets, which is characterized by skeletal deformities like bowed legs and weak, soft bones. Getting proper amounts of vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and vitamin K will strengthen your bones and keep them safe from getting fractured.

Fluoride is a mineral that helps prevent dental cavities and assists bones in forming properly.
