Vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin as the body makes it from the action of sunlight directly on the skin. It enhances calcium absorption and maintains calcium levels in the body, therefore playing a vital role in supporting healthy bones. Sufficient Vitamin D status is linked to lower risk of certain cancers. This includes colon cancer. Vitamin D liquid from Pure Encapsulations contains 1000iu of vitamin D3 (known as cholecalciferol) per drop, which appears to raise blood levels of vitamin D for longer than other forms of the vitamin.
Decreased exposure to sunlight, poor diet, or a low intake of vitamin D fortified foods play a role in inadequate vitamin D levels. Vitamin D levels are also shown to decline with age, due to a reduction in absorption or metabolism by the liver. A lack of vitamin D can lead to bone deformities such as rickets, and stunted growth in children, and bone pain caused by a condition called osteomalacia in adults. Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to osteoporosis, osteopenia and an increased likelihood of upper respiratory tract infections, colds and flu. Low levels have also been found in people with SAD, which is a form of depression/low mood. Supplementation has been shown to be an effective treatment approach. Vitamin D has also received attention for its role in preventing cardiovascular disease. Correcting vitamin D deficiency may result in improved glucose control and has beneficial effects on the complications of Type 2 diabetes.
It is recommended that everyone – including pregnant and breastfeeding women – should consider taking a vitamin D supplement, especially during autumn and winter when the sun is not strong enough for the body to make vitamin D. It is essential during pregnancy, to provide the baby with enough vitamin D for the first few months of life and help the baby’s bones, teeth, kidneys, heart and nervous system to develop.
